Two miles east of Chirk, this massive Norman castle was completed in 1310 by Roger Mortimer. Since 1595 it has been the home of the Myddleton family
There are four round drum towers at each corner of the castle, and another over the gatehouse.As most castles, it commands fine views over the surrounding countryside.
Of particular note are the wrought iron gates completed in 1733 by the Davies brothers
There are elegant state rooms to visit inside, with elaborate plasterwork and superb Adam-style furniture. There are some fine Stuart portraits, including ones of Charles I and Charles II
The beautiful 18th-century parkland contains many mature trees and also traces of Offa's Dyke.
