There was a 12th century castle on this site 1 mile east of Bangor in North Wales. However the present castle dates entirely from the 19th century.
It was byuilt with slate money that had earned the Pennant family their fortune. The castle was designed by Thomas Hopper and built between 1820 and 1845. The castle is an extraordinary "noe-Norman" or "neo-Gothic" design. Inside it is cathedral like, with a grand staircase and stone carving. The castle effect is reinforced by "Norman" furniture and decor. There is a slate bedstead weighing 4 tons
To give an idea of the family's wealth, a seven mile wall surrounds the estate. One can walk in the grounds.
The National Trust have added a number of exhibitions
